Temporary or permanent kidney problems are a rare but serious potential complication of cardiac catheterization. The precise cause of the kidney failure has not been established. Most of time these problems are temporary, returning to normal within 7 days and causing no permanent damage. Fewer than 1 in 100 patients that do develop kidney problems go on to require chronic dialysis.
