Tenormin Drug Interactions

More Information on Tenormin Drug Interactions

The following sections explain in detail the potentially negative interactions that can occur when Tenormin is combined with any of the drugs listed above.

Alpha Blockers
Combining Tenormin with an alpha blocker can increase the risk of dangerously low blood pressure (hypotension). Check with your healthcare provider before combining such medications.

Ampicillin (Omnipen, Polycillin, Principen, Totacillin)
Taking ampicillin and Tenormin together may decrease the amount of Tenormin in the body. If you are taking Tenormin and are prescribed ampicillin, let your healthcare provider know. He or she may choose to monitor your situation more closely, consider another antibiotic, and/or adjust your dose of Tenormin.

Calcium Channel Blockers
Combining Tenormin with certain calcium channel blockers may cause a dangerously low blood pressure and (for verapamil or diltiazem), a slow heart rate (bradycardia). You may need to be monitored closely if you take these medications together. In some cases, it is not recommended to combine Tenormin with a calcium channel blocker.

Certain Arrhythmia Medications
Combining Tenormin with certain arrhythmia medications may cause a dangerously slow heart rate (bradycardia). You may need to be monitored closely if you take these medications together. In some cases, it is not recommended to combine Tenormin with an arrhythmia medication.

Clonidine
If you take both clonidine and Tenormin, stopping clonidine (without stopping Tenormin) could increase the risk of dangerously high blood pressure, strokes, and other serious problems. It is advised to stop taking Tenormin several days before you gradually reduce the dose of clonidine. Do not attempt this without the approval and supervision of your healthcare provider. If you are switching from clonidine to Tenormin, it is advised to wait several days after stopping clonidine before starting Tenormin.
