Everything You Need to Know About Drug-Eluting Stents (DES)

It's an Evolving Science

The first drug-eluting stent was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) fairly recently (in 2003). Since then, scientists have been busy designing and testing different drug-eluting stents. What we know about the drug-eluting stents of today won't necessarily apply to the drug-eluting stents of tomorrow. The field is evolving quickly, and it's difficult to keep up with all the innovations and studies that come out.

This is where finding a doctor (and facility) you trust comes into play. A good doctor will stay current on the ever-changing field and will help decide which type of stent to use for your unique situation, based on the currently available information. However, this shouldn't prevent you from asking questions, especially if you are concerned that a different type of stent than what your doctor plans to use might be better for you.
