Propranolol Dosage for Angina
To improve
angina symptoms, the recommended dosage is anywhere from 80 mg to 320 mg of
propranolol daily. This amount is taken as smaller doses two, three, or four times a day based on your healthcare provider's recommendation. For example, your healthcare provider may recommend 40 mg of propranolol twice a day.
Propranolol Dosage for Atrial Fibrillation
For
symptoms of atrial fibrillation, your healthcare provider may prescribe 10 mg to 30 mg of propranolol, taken three or four times a day before meals and at bedtime.
An injectable form is also available for use in treating irregular heart rhythms (usually in emergency situations). It is generally recommended to take this medication on an empty stomach.
Propranolol Dosage Following a Heart Attack
Following a
heart attack, the specific propranolol dosage recommended can vary, based on a number of factors. It is generally anywhere between 180 mg and 240 mg a day. This amount is taken as smaller doses three or four times a day based on your healthcare provider's recommendation. For example, your healthcare provider may recommend 60 mg of propranolol three times a day.
Your healthcare provider may start you with a lower dosage before increasing to the recommended dosage.
Propranolol Dosage for a Migraine
For
migraine prevention, the starting dose of propranolol is typically 80 mg a day, taken several times a day in smaller doses (such as 40 mg twice a day). Based on the
migraine response and/or side effects of propranolol you experience (if any), your healthcare provider may increase or decrease the propranolol dosage.
An improvement in the number of
migraines should be noticed within four to six weeks. If it is not, your healthcare provider may have you slowly stop the propranolol over several weeks and then switch you to another
migraine medication.
