Drug Interactions With Pitavastatin

Fibrates
Taking a fibrate and pitavastatin at the same time may increase your risk for serious muscle problems, such as myopathy or rhabdomyolysis (see Livalo and Muscle Pain). Check with your healthcare provider before combining these medications. If you do take these medications together, you should contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any muscle pain or weakness.

Grapefruit Juice
Grapefruit juice can increase the level of pitavastatin in your blood, increasing your risk for dangerous side effects. If you are being treated with pitavastatin and want to eat grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice, talk to your healthcare provider about how much grapefruit juice is safe to consume, or about other cholesterol medications that you can take.

Niacin
Combining niacin with pitavastatin may increase the risk for serious muscle problems, such as myopathy or rhabdomyolysis (see Livalo and Muscle Pain). Check with your healthcare provider before combining these medications. If you do take these medications together, you may need a lower dose of pitavastatin. Also, you should contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any muscle pain or weakness.

Other Statins
Pitavastatin is a statin medication. Combining it with other statin medications may increase the risk of serious muscle problems, such as myopathy or rhabdomyolysis (see Livalo and Muscle Pain). In general, you should not use more than one statin medication at the same time.

Protease Inhibitors
Taking pitavastatin with a protease inhibitor may increase the level of pitavastatin in your blood. This can increase your risk for side effects, including serious muscle problems, such as myopathy or rhabdomyolysis (see Livalo and Muscle Pain). In general, it is recommended that these medications not be used together; if you do take them together, your healthcare provider may choose to monitor you more closely. You may also need a lower pitavastatin dose.
