Omega-3, Antiphospholipid Syndrome, and Miscarriages
One of the common causes of recurrent miscarriages is a condition known as antiphospholipid syndrome (APS). Early research suggests that
fish oil, which contains
omega-3 fatty acids, may help reduce the risk of recurrent miscarriages in women with this condition. This may be due to the "blood-thinning" properties of
omega-3 fatty acids, since antiphospholipid syndrome can cause miscarriages by causing blood clots, or to other properties of fish oil.
However, there are more established and proven ways to treat APS, such as with low-dose aspirin or heparin. If your healthcare provider includes an omega-3 supplement as part of a treatment plan for APS, make sure that your healthcare provider directs you to a safe supplement (one that is free of toxins). Do not add omega-3 fatty acid supplements to your current treatment plan without your healthcare provider's approval.
Pregnancy and Omega-3: Talking With Your Healthcare Provider
If you are pregnant, it is always a good idea to have a discussion with your healthcare provider before taking any medication or supplement, including omega-3 fatty acid products. It is important that you chose an omega-3 supplement that is free of toxins. Be sure to not exceed your healthcare provider's recommended dose of omega-3 fatty acids, since high doses can increase the risk of bleeding.
