Nitrostat Drug Interactions

Nitrostat Drug Interactions Explained

The following sections explain in detail the potentially negative reactions that can occur when Nitrostat is combined with any of the drugs listed above.

Alcohol
Combining alcohol with Nitrostat may increase the risk for low blood pressure (hypotension). Check with your healthcare provider before drinking alcohol while using Nitrostat.

Alteplase
Based on reports of a drug interaction with intravenous (IV) nitroglycerin, it is possible that Nitrostat could decrease the level of alteplase in the bloodstream, perhaps making it less effective. In the event that you need alteplase (which is sometimes used for people who are having a heart attack, blood clots, or certain types of strokes), make sure your healthcare provider knows you have been using Nitrostat.

Anticholinergics
Anticholinergic drugs have a tendency to cause a dry mouth, making it difficult to dissolve Nitrostat tablets in the mouth. Chewing gum or mouth products (such as Biotene®) specifically designed to treat a dry mouth may help with this problem.

Blood Pressure Medications
Combining Nitrostat with blood pressure medications may cause dangerously low blood pressure. Your blood pressure may need to be closely monitored if you take these medications together.

Ergot Medications
Ergot medications can make Nitrostat less effective at relieving chest pain (angina). Also, Nitrostat may increase the level of ergot medications in the blood, increasing the risk for ergot side effects. In general, this combination of medications should be avoided if possible.

Phenothiazines
Combining Nitrostat with a phenothiazine medication may cause dangerously low blood pressure. Your blood pressure may need to be closely monitored if you take these medications together.
