What Is Metoprolol Used For?
Is Metoprolol Used in Children?Lopressor has not been approved for use in children, but it may be used off-label to treat several conditions. For example, it may be used in children with Marfan syndrome to slow down the progression of aortic dilation (widening of the aorta).
Toprol-XL has been studied as a treatment for high blood pressure in children as young as six years old; it has not been adequately studied in children younger than six years old or for other uses.
On occasion, your healthcare provider may recommend metoprolol for treating something other than the conditions discussed in this article. This is called an "off-label" use. Some off-label uses for metoprolol include:
- Treatment of arrhythmias (abnormal electrical activity in the heart)
- Migraine prevention
- Hyperthyroidism treatment
- Relief of alcohol withdrawal symptoms
- Anxiety treatment, including social phobia and performance anxiety.
