Metoprolol Risks

Although many people do not experience any problems while taking
metoprolol (Lopressor® and Toprol-XL®), this medication is not free of risks. Some of the most common risks with metoprolol include:

  • A slow heart rate
  • Tiredness
  • Dizziness
  • Diarrhea.

If any problems do occur, they tend to be minor. However, there are some potentially serious problems that require immediate medical attention. Contact your healthcare provider if you experience serious problems such as unexplained swelling or sudden weight gain, chest pain, or difficulty breathing.

Other metoprolol warnings and precautions apply to women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, as well as people who have certain allergies (including allergies to foods, dyes, or preservatives). Also, you may not be able to take metoprolol if you have certain medical conditions, such as kidney disease, diabetes, or hyperthyroidism.
