Dosing With Metoprolol: An Introduction
The dose of
metoprolol (available as
Lopressor® and
Toprol-XL®) that your healthcare provider recommends will vary depending on a number of factors, including:
- Your age
- The form of metoprolol (immediate-release or extended-release)
- The medical condition you are being treated for
- Other medical conditions you may have
- Other medications you may be currently taking
- How you respond to metoprolol.
Metoprolol Dosing for High Blood Pressure
The recommended starting dosage of immediate-release metoprolol (Lopressor and generic
Metoprolol Tartrate) for people with
high blood pressure is 100 mg once a day or 50 mg twice a day. With extended-release metoprolol (
Toprol-XL and generic
Metoprolol Succinate), the recommended starting dosage is 25 mg to 100 mg once a day. After a couple of weeks, based on the
blood pressure response and/or
metoprolol side effects, the metoprolol dosage may be increased or decreased. Your healthcare provider may also add a diuretic (a "water pill") or another
blood pressure medication if your blood pressure is not controlled by metoprolol alone.
The maximum recommended daily dose of immediate-release metoprolol is 450 mg, and the maximum daily dosage of extended-release metoprolol is 400 mg.
