Metoprolol Dosing

There are several possible dosages of metoprolol; the dosage your healthcare provider recommends will depend on the medical condition being treated and your age, among other things. For the treatment of high blood pressure with immediate-release metoprolol, dosing recommendations generally start at 100 mg once a day or 50 mg twice a day. With extended-release metoprolol, the recommended starting dosage is 25 mg to 100 mg once daily.

Dosing With Metoprolol: An Introduction

The dose of metoprolol (available as Lopressor® and Toprol-XL®) that your healthcare provider recommends will vary depending on a number of factors, including:

  • Your age
  • The form of metoprolol (immediate-release or extended-release)
  • The medical condition you are being treated for
  • Other medical conditions you may have
  • Other medications you may be currently taking
  • How you respond to metoprolol.

Metoprolol Dosing for High Blood Pressure

The recommended starting dosage of immediate-release metoprolol (Lopressor and generic
Metoprolol Tartrate) for people with high blood pressure is 100 mg once a day or 50 mg twice a day. With extended-release metoprolol (Toprol-XL and generic Metoprolol Succinate), the recommended starting dosage is 25 mg to 100 mg once a day. After a couple of weeks, based on the blood pressure response and/or metoprolol side effects, the metoprolol dosage may be increased or decreased. Your healthcare provider may also add a diuretic (a "water pill") or another blood pressure medication if your blood pressure is not controlled by metoprolol alone.

The maximum recommended daily dose of immediate-release metoprolol is 450 mg, and the maximum daily dosage of extended-release metoprolol is 400 mg.
