Metoprolol Alternatives

Although many people do not experience any problems while taking
metoprolol (Lopressor® and Toprol-XL®), this medication is not suitable for everyone. Fortunately, there are several alternatives to metoprolol available. Some of these alternatives include blood pressure medications. There are several categories of medication used to treat high blood pressure. Often, two or more drugs work better than one. The main types of medication for high blood pressure include:

  • Beta blockers
  • Diuretics
  • Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACE inhibitors)
  • Angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs)
  • Calcium channel blockers (CCBs)
  • Alpha blockers
  • Alpha-beta blockers
  • Nervous system inhibitors
  • Vasodilators.
  •
If metoprolol is not working for you or if it is causing bothersome side effects, ask your healthcare provider about trying a metoprolol alternative.
