Heart Disease Home > Nitrostat Side Effects

Headaches, dizziness, and nausea are some of the possible side effects of Nitrostat. Although most reactions to this angina medication tend to be minor, there are serious problems that can occur during treatment. Contact your healthcare provider right away if you develop chest pain that is becoming worse, a bluish discoloration of the skin, or other potentially serious problems.

An Introduction to Nitrostat Side Effects

Just like any medicine, Nitrostat® (nitroglycerin tablets) can cause side effects. However, not everyone who uses the medication will have problems. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are treated easily by you or your healthcare provider.
(This article covers many, but not all, of the possible side effects with Nitrostat. Your healthcare provider can discuss a more complete list with you.)

Common Side Effects of Nitrostat

For many medications, the prescribing information carefully explains the exact percentage of side effects that were reported in clinical trials. However, the prescribing information for almost all older medications, including many nitroglycerin products, includes only vague information on potential side effects, with no percentages provided. Therefore, it can be difficult to know exactly how frequently the side effects occur.
With most nitroglycerin products, including Nitrostat, the most notable side effect is headaches. These headaches can be quite severe and can happen every time a person uses Nitrostat.
Low blood pressure (hypotension) is also a fairly common reaction and can cause side effects such as:
  • Lightheadedness
  • Dizziness
  • A spinning sensation (vertigo)
  • Heart palpitations
  • Weakness
  • Fainting.
Other possible side effects of Nitrostat may include:
  • Flushing of the skin
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Sweating.
