Symptoms of Heart Disease in Women: Heart Attack

In some women, the first symptom of heart disease is a heart attack. In fact, nearly two-thirds of American women who die suddenly of a heart attack had no prior symptoms of heart disease. A heart attack occurs when a coronary artery becomes blocked. Symptoms of a heart attack in women may include:

  • Pain or discomfort in the center of the chest for more than 20 minutes. The discomfort can feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness, or pain.
  • Pain or discomfort lasting more than 20 minutes in other areas of the upper body, including the arms, back, neck, jaw, or stomach.
  • Other symptoms, such as shortness of breath, breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea, or feeling faint or woozy.

Some women may have more vague symptoms, such as:

  • Unusual tiredness
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Problems breathing
  • Indigestion (upset stomach)
  • Anxiety (feeling uneasy or worried).

Symptoms of Heart Disease in Women: A Summary

Only 55 percent of women are aware that heart disease is the leading cause of death among women. And unfortunately, women are less likely to recognize the symptoms of heart disease. Women experiencing possible symptoms of heart disease should call their healthcare provider immediately or call 911.
