Nitrostat Medication Information

Available by prescription only, Nitrostat® (nitroglycerin tablets) is a drug approved for relieving episodes of chest pain (angina) in adults with coronary heart disease. This medicine works by relaxing the arteries and veins to improve blood flow to the heart.

Nitrostat comes in the form of a tablet that is dissolved under the tongue or between the cheek and gum. Use one tablet as soon as your chest pain starts, or just before activity that may cause chest pain. You can take a second and third tablet, with five minutes between each tablet, if your chest pain continues. If you still have chest pain after the third tablet, seek immediate medical care.

Although the drug is generally well tolerated, it is not suitable for everyone. Before using Nitrostat, make sure your healthcare provider has up-to-date information on your medical history and a list of your current medications. In particular, make sure to let your healthcare provider know if you have low blood pressure or any allergies.
