Icosapent Ethyl Drug Information

A healthcare provider may recommend icosapent ethyl (VascepaTM) to adults who have extremely high triglyceride levels. This prescription medicine contains a highly refined form of the omega-3 fatty acid eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). It is thought to work by decreasing production of triglycerides in the liver and increasing the breakdown of triglycerides in the bloodstream.

Available in the form of a capsule, icosapent ethyl is taken twice a day with food. Joint pain is the most commonly reported side effect of this medicine.

Although this can be an effective drug for many people, not everyone can take it. Information on icosapent ethyl should be reviewed with your healthcare provider before taking this product to help ensure a safe treatment. For instance, women may not be able to use this medication while pregnant, as it may cause harm to the unborn child.
