Dofetilide Medication Information

Adults who have atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter (certain types of an irregular heart rate) may receive a prescription drug called dofetilide (Tikosyn®). However, before taking this medication, your healthcare provider needs information on your medical history and a current list of all medications, vitamins, and supplements you are taking.

While this medication may help return the heart rate to a normal rhythm in some people, it is not appropriate for everyone. In fact, dofetilide can cause a potentially life-threatening heart rhythm problem. Because of this risk, you must receive your initial dofetilide doses in the hospital, where your heart and kidneys can be carefully monitored for at least three days.

Dofetilide comes as a capsule and is taken twice daily. Side effects may include chest pain, headaches, and dizziness.
