Flecainide Dosage

Flecainide tablets are typically taken every 8 or 12 hours to prevent certain heart rhythm problems. Your recommended starting dosage of flecainide will depend on the reason you are taking the medicine, other medications you are taking, and various other factors. You may need to start the medication in the hospital so your healthcare provider can monitor your response to this medication.

An Introduction to Your Dosage of Flecainide

The dose of flecainide acetate (Tambocor™) your healthcare provider recommends will vary, depending on a number of factors, including:

  • The reason you are taking the medication
  • How you respond to it
  • Your height and weight (in children)
  • Other medical conditions you may have
  • Other medicines you are taking.

As is always the case, do not adjust your dosage unless your healthcare provider specifically tells you to do so.

Flecainide Dosing for Paroxysmal Supraventricular Tachycardia (PSVT)

The recommended starting dosage of flecainide for preventing PSVT is usually 50 mg every 12 hours. Your healthcare provider may increase this amount by 50 mg twice a day, no more often than every four days, until you are at a dosage that adequately controls your condition. The maximum recommended flecainide dose for preventing PSVT is 300 mg a day (150 mg every 12 hours).

Flecainide Dosage for Paroxysmal Atrial Fibrillation or Flutter (PAF)

The recommended initial dose of flecainide for preventing PAF is usually 50 mg every 12 hours. Your healthcare provider may increase this amount by 50 mg twice a day, no more often than every four days, until you are at a dosage that adequately controls your condition. For PAF, doses of 100 mg twice a day are usually more effective than lower doses, without causing many more side effects.
