Drug Interactions With Flecainide

More Detail on Drug Interactions With Flecainide

The following sections explain in detail the potentially negative reactions that can occur when flecainide is combined with any of the drugs listed above.

Amiodarone
Amiodarone may increase blood levels of flecainide, increasing the risk for potentially serious flecainide side effects. If you take these medications together, your healthcare will need to monitor your flecainide blood levels, using a simple blood test, and determine your dose based on those blood levels. You will likely be given a lower-than-normal flecainide dosage.

Antacids Containing Sodium Bicarbonate
Sodium bicarbonate can increase blood levels of flecainide, increasing the risk for side effects. However, sodium bicarbonate has also been reported to make flecainide less effective. Therefore, it is important that your healthcare provider closely monitor your response to flecainide if you are using a medication that contains sodium bicarbonate.

Boceprevir
Boceprevir may increase blood levels of certain antiarrhythmic medications, including flecainide, potentially increasing your risk for serious side effects. Your healthcare will monitor you closely if you take these medications together.

Carbonic Anhydrase Inhibitors
Carbonic anhydrase inhibitors can increase blood levels of flecainide, increasing the risk for flecainide side effects. Your healthcare provider may need to monitor you more closely if you start or stop taking a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor during flecainide treatment.

CYP 2D6 Inhibitor Medications
The liver breaks down flecainide using enzymes known as CYP 2D6 enzymes, and medications known as CYP 2D6 inhibitors can decrease the activity of these enzymes. Talk to your healthcare provider before taking flecainide with one of these drugs.
