Pregnancy and Fish Oil

Fish Oil and Recurrent Miscarriages

One of the common causes of recurrent miscarriages is a condition known as antiphospholipid syndrome (APS). Early research suggests that fish oil supplements may help reduce the risk of recurrent miscarriages in women with this condition. This may be due to the "blood-thinning" properties of fish oil (because antiphospholipid syndrome can cause miscarriages by forming blood clots).

However, there are more established and proven ways to treat APS (such as with low-dose aspirin). If your healthcare provider recommends fish oil as part of a treatment plan for APS, make sure to have your healthcare provider direct you to a safe form of fish oil (that is free of toxins). Do not add fish oil to your current treatment plan without your healthcare provider's approval.

Talking With Your Healthcare Provider

If you are pregnant, it is always a good idea to have a discussion with your healthcare provider before taking any medication or supplement, including fish oil. It is very important that you chose a fish oil supplement that is free of toxins. Be sure not to exceed your healthcare provider's recommended dose of fish oil, as high doses can increase the risk of bleeding.
