Fish Oil Drug Interactions

Fish Oil Interactions Explained

The following sections explain in detail the potentially negative interactions that can occur when fish oil is combined with some of the drugs listed above.

Blood Pressure Medication
Taking fish oil with high blood pressure medication may decrease your blood pressure too much, increasing the risk of low blood pressure (hypotension). Check with your healthcare provider before combining fish oil supplements with blood pressure medications, as your healthcare provider may need to monitor you more closely and adjust the dose of your blood pressure medication as necessary.

Medications That "Thin" the Blood
Combining fish oil with medications that increase the risk of bleeding (such as antiplatelet and anticoagulant medications) could, at least in theory, further increase the risk of bleeding, including dangerous internal bleeding.

Check with your healthcare provider before taking fish oil in combination with an anticoagulant or antiplatelet medication. Be sure to specifically discuss the possible bleeding risk. In many cases, your healthcare provider may recommend that it is okay to combine such medications, as long as you are careful to watch for any signs of easy bruising or bleeding.

Orlistat (Alli, Xenical)
Orlistat works by blocking the absorption of fat into your body. This action could also block the absorption of fish oil into the body. To avoid this problem, be sure to take orlistat and your fish oil supplement at least two hours apart.
