Serious Side Effects

  • Signs of bleeding, such as:
     
    • Unusual bruising (bruises that develop without known cause or grow in size)
    • Blood in the urine
    • Blood in the stool (usually seen as red or black stools)
    • Nosebleeds
    • Bleeding gums
    • Bleeding from cuts that takes a long time to stop
    • Menstrual bleeding or vaginal bleeding that is heavier than normal
    • Coughing up blood
    • Low blood pressure
    • Vomiting blood or material that looks like coffee grounds
 
  • Signs of thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP), such as:
     
    • Pinpoint bruising on the skin
    • Fever
    • A general ill feeling
    • Low blood platelets (found using a blood test)
    • Kidney problems
    • Headache
    • Confusion
    • Seizures
    • Coma
    • Abdominal pain (stomach pain)
    • An irregular heart rhythm (arrhythmia)
 
  • Signs of an allergic reaction, such as:
     
    • An unexplained rash
    • Itching
    • Hives
    • Swelling of the mouth or throat
    • Wheezing
    • Difficulty breathing.
 

Final Thoughts

Effient can be a life-saving drug; unfortunately, the side effects can be life-threatening. Therefore, make sure to let your healthcare provider know if you develop any problems while taking the drug or if something "just does not seem right."
