Currently, it is unknown if
Effient® (
prasugrel hydrochloride) is safe for use in breastfeeding women. Therefore, be sure to talk with your healthcare provider before nursing a child while taking this medication.
More Information on Effient and Breastfeeding
No studies have checked to see if Effient passes through breast milk in humans, although the drug is known to pass through breast milk in rats. It is not known if this medication could cause problem for breastfed infants.
It should be noted that Effient is always used with aspirin, and in general, aspirin should be avoided by breastfeeding women. If your healthcare provider recommends Effient for you, it may be best to stop breastfeeding, especially since Effient can be a life-saving medication and is generally only used in serious situations, such as after a
heart attack. The benefits of the drug for you probably outweigh the benefits of breastfeeding for both you and your child.
