Diltiazem Side Effects

Based on extensive clinical studies of diltiazem, side effects of the drug most commonly included things such as headaches, indigestion, and a sore throat. In most cases, side effects are mild and can be easily treated. However, you should contact your healthcare provider right away if you develop more serious side effects of diltiazem, such as an irregular heart rhythm, depression, or hallucinations.

An Introduction to Diltiazem Side Effects

As with any medicine, side effects are possible with diltiazem hydrochloride. However, not everyone who takes the medication will experience side effects. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If diltiazem side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or can easily be treated by you or your healthcare provider.

(This article covers many, but not all, of the possible side effects with diltiazem. Your healthcare provider can discuss a more complete list of diltiazem side effects with you.)

Common Side Effects of Diltiazem

Diltiazem has been thoroughly studied in clinical trials.
In these studies, the side effects of a group of people taking the drug are documented and then compared to the side effects that occur in another group of people not taking the medicine. As a result, it is possible to see what side effects occur, how often they appear, and how they compare to the group not taking the medicine.

In these studies, the most common side effects of diltiazem included:

  • Swelling or water retention in the hands, feet, or lower legs
  • Dizziness
  • Headaches
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Indigestion
  • Infections
  • Pain
  • A sore throat
  • Fatigue
  • A slow heart rate (bradycardia)
  • Sinus congestion
  • Coughing
  • Nausea
  • Weakness.
