When and How to Take Dabigatran

Some general considerations for taking this medicine include the following:
  • This medication comes in capsule form. It is taken by mouth twice daily.
  • You can take this medication with or without food. Take it with a full glass of water.
  • Dabigatran capsules should be swallowed whole. Do not crush, chew, or open the capsules, as this may cause you to absorb too much of the medication.
  • Your healthcare provider will take into account your particular situation when recommending how long you should continue to take this medication. Some people may need to take it longer than others.
  • For the medication to work properly, it must be taken as directed. Do not stop taking it without your healthcare provider's approval and supervision.

Storage Information

Dabigatran should be stored at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Keep this and all other medications out of the reach of children.
You must keep dabigatran in the original container -- either the original bottle or the original blister packaging, depending on how your medication was packaged. Keep the lid tightly closed. For dabigatran in the bottle, you must discard it after four months of first opening the bottle. The medication is sensitive to moisture, and the cap has a built-in desiccator to help remove moisture.
Make sure your pharmacist does not dispense your dabigatran in a regular pharmacy bottle. It should be dispensed (and stored) in the original manufacturer's packaging only.

What Should I Do If I Miss a Dose?

If you do not take your dabigatran as scheduled, take your missed dose as soon as possible, as long as there are at least six hours before your next dose. However, if it is already within six hours of your next dose, simply skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule.
