Coumadin Warnings and Precautions

Who Should Not Take This Drug?

You should not take Coumadin if you:
  • Are allergic to Coumadin, warfarin sodium, or any inactive components used to make the medication (your healthcare provider or pharmacist has a list of the inactive ingredients)
  • Have a bleeding disorder or a blood disorder that could increase the risk of bleeding
  • Have bleeding tendencies associated with ulceration or other bleeding, such as:
    • Gastrointestinal bleeding or ulcers (such as a stomach ulcer)
    • Bleeding of the respiratory tract
    • Bleeding in the brain, such as with a hemorrhagic stroke
    • An brain aneurysm or aortic aneurysm
    • Inflammation of the sac around the heart (a condition known as pericarditis)
    • A bacterial infection of the inner layer of the heart (bacterial endocarditis)
  • Have recently had (or will have) surgery of the brain, spinal cord, or eyes
  • Have recently had (or will have) major traumatic surgery
  • Are not in an area with a laboratory that can perform the blood tests necessary for Coumadin monitoring
  • Are not able or willing to comply with all the requirements necessary to take Coumadin
  • Will be having a spinal tap or a procedure with the possibility of uncontrollable bleeding
  • Will be having epidural or spinal anesthesia.
