Does CoQ10 Work?

Does CoQ10 Work for Migraines?

Studies suggest that taking CoQ10 daily may help to prevent migraine headaches in adults and children. However, it does not seem to lessen the severity or duration of migraine headaches. More research is necessary before CoQ10 should be recommended for this use. It is not known if CoQ10 works better or is less expensive than other treatments used for migraine prevention.

Does CoQ10 Work for Male Infertility?

Early research seems to suggest that CoQ10 may be useful for men who have infertility problems due to poor sperm motility. Taking CoQ10 for at least six months may improve sperm motility, but more research is necessary to confirm these findings.

Does CoQ10 Work for CoQ10 Deficiencies?

CoQ10 may help people with documented deficiencies. Some people do not produce enough CoQ10 (unrelated to other medical conditions). This type of condition is rare and is usually genetic. Supplements may help people with this condition by replacing the CoQ10 that the body does not make.

Some prescription drugs (especially "statin" cholesterol drugs) can deplete CoQ10 levels. This depletion may contribute to the muscle problems associated with statin medications. Some studies have shown that CoQ10 may prevent or treat muscle problems due to statins, although other studies have shown conflicting and inconclusive results. At this point, there is not enough scientific evidence to recommend that everyone taking a statin medicine should also take CoQ10.

Does CoQ10 Work for Mitochondrial Diseases?

CoQ10 seems to work for some mitochondrial diseases. Mitochondria are important structures found in almost all human cells. They are known as organelles ("little organs"). Mitochondria have several extremely important roles, including energy production and influence over cell growth and cell death. There are several known mitochondrial diseases. Some of these diseases are genetic, while others are not. These diseases are relatively rare, but they can have devastating effects, such as seizures, strokes, heart problems, and developmental problems.

Studies have shown that CoQ10 supplementation can help improve the brain symptoms, such as seizures, in people with certain mitochondrial diseases. For such use, the benefit is slow to develop, often taking several months to see improvement.
