Centrum Cardio and Breastfeeding
No research has been done on Centrum Cardio and breastfeeding, so it is not known whether it is safe for women to use this vitamin while nursing a child. Because Centrum Cardio may have some effects on hormones, there is reason to believe that it could cause problems in a breastfeeding woman or her infant. In general, most women who are breastfeeding may be advised to use a prenatal vitamin.
An Overview of Centrum Cardio and Breastfeeding
Centrum Cardio® is a non-prescription multivitamin. In addition to being a general multivitamin, Centrum Cardio contains plant sterols and is designed to lower cholesterol and promote heart health. It is assumed that a normal intake of plant sterols (through a healthy diet) is safe. It is not known, however, if plant sterols from supplements (such as Centrum Cardio) are safe for women who are breastfeeding.Centrum Cardio and Breastfeeding: What Does the Research Say?
There is no research to suggest that Centrum Cardio is safe (or unsafe) for women who are breastfeeding. Because plant sterols may have some effects on hormones, specifically testosterone and dihydrotestosterone (DHT), there is reason to believe that plant sterol supplements could potentially cause problems in a breastfeeding woman or her infant, especially if taken at high doses.A prenatal vitamin (a multivitamin designed especially for pregnant women) or a regular multivitamin (that does not contain plant sterols) is probably a better choice for women who are breastfeeding. Although Centrum Cardio is probably not likely to cause any problems when used during breastfeeding, the full risks are not yet known.
