Cardiovascular Health (Cont.)

Medications
As part of maintaining good cardiovascular health, medications may be needed in addition to making lifestyle changes. Some medications decrease the workload on your heart and relieve your heart disease symptoms. Others decrease your chance of having a heart attack, stroke, or sudden death. By controlling your risk factors with lifestyle changes and medications, you may prevent or slow down the development of cardiovascular disease.

Cardiovascular Health: A Summary

With so many conditions that can affect the cardiovascular system, it might seem daunting to think about cardiovascular health. However, cardiovascular health does not need to be complicated. If you learn your risk factors and do something about them, you are well on your way.

Good cardiovascular health can significantly lower your chances for developing cardiovascular disease. Research shows that people can lower their risk enormously -- by as much as 82 percent -- simply by adopting sensible health habits, regardless of their age, background, or health status. Protecting your body from the effects of cardiovascular disease can be as simple as taking a brisk walk, eating well, or getting the support you need to maintain a healthy weight. Also, it's never too late to start protecting your cardiovascular health. A recent study shows that among people ages 70 to 90, leading a healthy lifestyle reduced the chances of dying from cardiovascular disease by nearly two-thirds.
