Temporary or permanent kidney problems are one of the rare but potentially serious cardiac catheterization complications. The precise cause of the kidney failure has not been established. Most of the time, these problems are temporary: kidney function returns to normal within seven days and no permanent damage is caused. Fewer than 1 in 100 patients who do develop kidney problems go on to require chronic dialysis.
