If you have kidney disease, you are at an increased risk for kidney failure when you have a procedure that requires the use of intravenous contrast dye, such as a cardiac catheterization. If you develop kidney failure, you may need medical treatment to filter your blood. This is commonly called dialysis. In most cases, kidney failure that is caused by intravenous contrast dye is not permanent.
